You can also get calcium from fortified orange juice and soy milk. If you do not have an allergy to dairy products and include them in your diet, you can really benefit from drinking goat’s milk and eating the cheese made from this milk.

If you body is not getting the amounts of calcium it needs, this can result in calcium deficiency. It won’t happen overnight, but is rather the result of not getting enough calcium over a long period of time. The most obvious sign of a deficiency in this mineral is osteoporosis. The bones naturally weaken with age, which is why it is so important to maintain the calcium levels in the body to keep the bones and joints strong and healthy.

Rickets, a medical condition that affects the bones, is also the result of a deficiency in calcium. Not eating foods rich in calcium or taking dietary supplements depletes the store of this mineral in the body. This in turn affects the pH levels in the body and causes illnesses. It also lowers the ability of the immune system to fight off viruses and germs.

Toxicity to calcium is rare because the body is able to absorb the calcium from the digestive system. One of the side effects of taking calcium supplements or of getting too much calcium in your diet could be constipation or kidney stones. However, if you do consume high levels of calcium over time, especially if this is combined with a high level of Vitamin D, the body may absorb too much of the mineral. The result could be concentrations of calcium in the blood and the tissues.
