Folic Acid, sometimes referred to as Folate, is another vitamin. The best sources of Folic Acid are leafy green vegetables but other sources include oranges, avocados and whole wheat products. Folic Acid is important for healthy body function- it helps make cells and genetic material, it helps with digesting protein, it helps pregnant women stay healthy and it ensures that people have healthy nervous, digestive and immune systems.
Of all vitamins, Folic Acid is the one that people are most likely to suffer a deficiency of. The elderly, people who take certain medications and those who drink too much alcohol are those most likely to suffer from folic acid deficiency. Symptoms of folic acid deficiency include:
Anemia - A prolonged deficiency of folic acid can lead to anemia. If you are suffering from anemia, your symptoms may be lethargy, apathy, breathlessness, forgetfulness, irritability and stomach disorders.
Effects on the Cardiovascular System - Many studies have been performed that show a link between a deficiency of folic acid in the body and an increased risk of heart disease.
Effects on the brain and nervous system - A deficiency of folic acid can cause mood disorders. Symptoms would include irritability, forgetfulness and hostility. In some people, it may also lead to depression.
Effects on the gastrointestinal system - A biotin deficiency will also have an effect on the gastrointestinal system. It could lead to a loss of appetite or nausea. It can also lead to diarrhea.
Effects on pregnant women - Many birth defects can be attributed to a lack of folic acid in a pregnant woman's diet. Cancer- Some studies have linked a lack of folic acid in the diet to increased chances of cancer especially in the colon, cervix or lung.
It is very rare for people to experience toxic side effects from excess consumption of folic acid. However, toxicity symptoms may include allergic skin reactions, sleep problems and disturbances of the intestine.
