Selenium Part 2
A deficiency of selenium in the body can lead to serious medical conditions. Heart disease is one of these where low levels of this mineral can increase the build up of plaque in the arteries. Depression is also one of the conditions that can result from such a deficiency.
Other conditions include acne, psoriasis, liver disease and rheumatoid arthritis. The symptoms associated with an improper amount of this mineral include muscle pain and weakness and inflammation of the muscles. Such a deficiency can be caused by an unbalanced diet and a prolonged time on IV in cases of severe illnesses or injuries.
Just as you can have a deficiency of this trace mineral, you can also have too much of it in your system, which leads to toxicity. The symptoms of such toxicity include loss of your hair and nails, lesions developing on the skin, feelings of excessive tiredness, nausea and vomiting.
It can also lead to blood clots because it affects the body's ability to clot the blood properly.
The normal daily dose of selenium in dietary supplements ranges from 55 to 70 mg per day depending on the age of the patient. Pregnant women, for example, need to take 65 mg per day.
Cancer patients receive a higher daily dose – up to 200 mg per day. since it has been proven that a high dose of selenium does help fight this disease.
