Selenium

Although selenium (Se) is only present in trace amounts in the body, it is essential for optimum health. It works with Vitamin E to rid the body of free radicals that can damage the cells causing illness and disease. In this way, it provides significant support for the immune system in its work of keeping viruses and germs from invading the body.

This mineral is also necessary for the production of prostaglandins. These substances are necessary to keep the blood pressure within the normal range and to help the body fight the inflammation associated with infections and injuries.

Another function of this mineral in your body is the production of glutathione peroxidise. This is an essential enzyme needed by the body to help it get rid of harmful toxins. It also helps to reduce the toxicity levels of some of the other minerals found in the human body.

There are many foods that are rich in selenium, but the extent of the content of the mineral in the food depends on the content of the soil in various locations. Scientists have determined that the content is really low in the United States and in China.

The foods that should be included in a healthy diet to ensure your body does have the right amounts of this trace mineral are:

  • hazelnuts, dried and unblanched are one of the best sources
  • roasted nuts, especially salted peanuts
  • tuna, canned in either oil or water
  • raw molluscs and oysters
  • fish, cooked under dry heat
  • chicken
  • pork
  • beef liver
  • canned shellfish
  • turkey
  • pork
  • bread stuffing
  • waffles
  • some fast foods
