Sulphur or Sulfur
Sulphur (S) is the most abundant mineral in the body and one that performs numerous necessary roles associated with maintaining the body's good health. It has often been called a miracle mineral because of the many ways in which it provides support to all the organs.
It plays a significant role in the body's production of collagen, which is essential to healthy skin. Other ways in which sulphur is essential in the body are:
- it provides vital support in cell respiration in which the cells are able to make efficient use of oxygen
- it is a natural detoxifier in helping the body rid itself of harmful toxins that cause disease
- it supports the work of the immune system
- it helps relieves the symptoms of arthritis and other ailments associated with aging
The main storehouse of sulphur in the body is in the ears. Radish, cabbage and mustard are three of the foods high in this mineral and they have been found to be very effective in the treatment of the common cold. Infections are also treated with drugs containing sulphur because of its healing properties.
Proteins in the diet are the best food sources of sulphur for your dietary needs. When we eat protein in our diet, the body breaks then down into different amino acids, which are then used to produce new proteins. These protein components are used to help the body produce the amounts of sulphur it needs to function properly and to remain healthy. These foods include:
- beef, especially liver
- lean meats
- poultry
- pork
- fish
- eggs – poached, boiled, fried, scrambled, raw or in an omelette
- vegetables
- milk
- garlic
- seaweed, especially kelp
- nuts and seeds
- brown and white bread rolls
