Vitamin B5, also referred to as Pantothenic Acid, is a water soluble vitamin. Vitamin B5 helps create energy in the body by releasing it from food, it is important for the metabolism of cholesterol and fatty acid, it helps regenerate blood cells, it is important for a healthy immune system and nervous system and it is important for healthy adrenal gland function. Sources of Vitamin B5 include liver, eggs, vegetables such as broccholi and mushrooms, milk, meat and wheat.
Deficiency is not common in the western world, but there are some possible symptoms that could suggest a deficiency. Symptoms of Vitamin B5 deficiency are often felt in conjunction with other B vitamin deficiencies.

Effects on the brain and nervous system - If you don't have enough Vitamin B5 in your diet, you could feel depression and it could lead to a loss of vision. You may also feel a decrease in the sensitivity of touch. Vitamin B5 deficiency can also lead to shrinking of the adrenal glands. You could also suffer from headaches.
Effects on the gastrointestinal system - A deficiency of Vitamin B5 can have a drastic effect on your gastrointestinal system. You may feel a loss of appetite as well as nausea and abdominal pains.
Effects on the skin - A deficiency of Vitamin B5 can also lead to swollen and cracked red lips as well as burning and itching of the eyes. In some cases it can exacerbate dermatitis.
Although it is possible to feel toxic side-effects from excess consumption of Vitamin B5, it is extremely rare. If you do have an excess consumption of Vitamin B5, you could see the following symptoms - diarrhea, fluid retention, memory loss, drowsiness, depression and nausea.
